STROKE FACTS

Each year an estimated 10,400 people are admitted to Singapore hospitals for stroke or TIA. It is the No. 4 killer after Cancer, Heart Diseases and Pneumonia.

Mortality from stroke has declined in Singapore over the last 25 years. The standardized death rate from stroke in Singapore (after adjusting for the ageing of the Singapore population) has fallen from 99 per 100,000 population in 1976 to 42.2 per 100,000 in 2000.

This declining trend is also noted in many industrialized countries.

The reason for the decline in stroke mortality in these countries and Singapore is not clear. The most likely explanation is a decline in the average levels of stroke risk factors in the population.

National Health Surveys carried out in Singapore showed that the prevalence of hypertension had declined from 14.1% in 1974 to 15.3% in 1984 and 13.6% in 1992. The prevalence of undiagnosed hypertension also declined over the same period. The surveys also show a fall in the prevalence of smoking and blood cholesterol level, although the prevalence of diabetes mellitus had risen.
