Stroke Prevention

It is important to understand that stroke is preventable by lowering your risk factors.

There are many factors that can increase your chance of having a stroke. Some of these, like age, gender and a family history of stroke, cannot be controlled. But there are other factors that you can control.

High blood pressure

The most important treatable risk factor for stroke. Know your blood pressure and have it checked at least once every two years, more often if you have risk factors for stroke. It should be lower than 140/90 mmHg; if you are diabetic, it should be lower than 130/80 mmHg.
